What is Judo?
Judo, "the gentle way", is an Olympic combat sport and one of the most effective martial arts ever developed. Founded in Japan in 1882, judo teaches practitioners to throw opponents using leverage, balance, and timing, then control them on the ground through pins, chokes, and armlocks. Despite the name, there is nothing gentle about a well-executed judo throw.

Where BJJ excels on the ground and wrestling focuses on takedowns, judo combines both, with an arsenal of throws that can end a fight in a single explosive moment. This makes it exceptionally practical for MMA, self-defence, and competition.
Judo at Zilla Training
Jay Cullen runs Zilla's judo programme, bringing technical rigour and competitive experience to every session. Jay's coaching covers both traditional judo competition (under IJF rules) and the practical application of judo within MMA and self-defence contexts, meaning you develop skills that work in the dojo, in the cage, and on the street.
Sessions are structured progressively: fundamental throws and breakfalls for beginners, advanced combinations and grip-fighting for experienced judoka, and tactical randori (sparring) that builds real-world timing and reaction. Jay is known for making complex throwing mechanics feel intuitive — his breakdowns of foot placement, hip positioning, and kuzushi (breaking balance) are exceptionally clear.
Why Train Judo?
Judo develops explosive power, core strength, grip endurance, and spatial awareness in a way that almost no other training can match. The confidence that comes from knowing you can control and throw someone larger than you is transformative. And for MMA practitioners, judo throws are among the highest-impact techniques available: a clean judo throw can shift the entire dynamic of a fight in under a second.
